Still Water, Open Sky

The lake looks settled long before we are. Water holds the mountains without distortion, trees lining the edge as if they have always been there, sky open and clear. We slow down without discussion. The camp goes up close to the shore, not out of convenience, but because stopping here feels inevitable.

As the afternoon fades, the air cools just enough to notice. Chairs gather around the fire, jackets come on, and the small rituals of evening begin. The flames pull everyone closer, warming hands and faces in uneven light. Behind it all, the vehicle rests quietly, part of the scene but no longer the reason for it.

Flames draw us closer, hands and faces warmed, while the world around slowly folds into evening.

Dusk gives way to night without ceremony. The fire holds its ground while the mountains disappear into shadow. Conversations thin out, then return softer. Beyond the glow, the sky opens fully, stars sharp and uninterrupted. The kind of sky that makes you stand still longer than planned, as if moving too quickly would break something.

The sky opens wide, sharp and endless, inviting quiet thought and long, slow glances upward.

Later, silence settles in its own way. The fire burns lower, the night deepens, and the camp becomes a small pocket of warmth surrounded by dark woods and open sky. Nothing feels unfinished. Sleep comes easily.

Morning arrives quietly. From inside the tent, the woods look different now, softer, awake. Light filters through branches, shadows stretching across the ground. The air feels fresh, unclaimed. For a moment, no one moves. It feels right to let the day begin on its own.

First light slips gently through the branches, a quiet moment before the day decides to move.

Some places stay with you not because of what you did there, but because of how gently they let you arrive, and how unhurried they let you leave.
